June is a great time to get outside with your pup – longer days, blooming flowers, and plenty of tail-wagging energy. But a smooth dog walk doesn’t always just happen on its own.

From tangled leashes to surprise run-ins with other dogs, things can get a little chaotic. That’s why a bit of dog walking etiquette goes a long way – and here at Wag 4 Tails, it’s something we live by every single day. 💛

🪴 Keep Your Pup on a Leash (And Respect Everyone’s Space)

Even the sweetest, most well-trained dogs can get distracted by other pets, loud sounds, or that squirrel across the street. Keeping your dog leashed keeps everyone safe – your dog, other pets, and nearby humans.

Quick tips:

  • Use a shorter leash in busy areas
  • Save longer leashes for wide-open parks
  • Not all dogs (or people!) are up for surprise meet-and-greets – always ask first
  • Watch out for joggers, kids, and cyclists

At Wag 4 Tails, our walkers are trained to navigate all sorts of social situations with grace – your dog gets a safe walk, and your neighbors get to enjoy their day, too.

👎 Pick Up After Your Dog (And Pack the Essentials!)

It’s a universal truth: no one wants to step in dog poop. Always carry waste bags and clean up after your pup. It’s polite, it’s the law in most places, and it keeps our neighborhood looking lovely.

Pack these for your walk:

  • Poop bags (lots of them!)
  • Water and a collapsible bowl – it’s getting warm out
  • A few treats for rewards
  • Maybe a towel if your dog loves puddles

🐶 Stay Calm Around Other Dogs (And Be Alert)

Some dogs love to make friends. Others? Not so much. Always check your surroundings before letting your pup approach another dog. And remember, a wagging tail doesn’t always mean a wagging mood.

Good etiquette means:

  • Watching body language – ears back, tail tucked, stiff posture = time to back off
  • Giving space during walks – no need to crowd
  • Staying alert in busy areas like sidewalks or intersections

Wag 4 Tails walkers are experienced in handling reactive, shy, and social dogs – and everything in between. We know how to read the signals and keep things smooth and stress-free.

🚶‍♂️ No Pulling, No Jumping – Keep Things Chill

Pulling on the leash or jumping on people can be dangerous – and not everyone loves a surprise doggy hug (no matter how adorable your pup is). Practicing polite walking makes a big difference.

What helps:

  • Training your dog to walk calmly by your side
  • Teaching a polite sit before greeting people
  • Using a harness if needed for better control

Not quite there yet? Don’t stress. We’re happy to help! Our walkers at Wag 4 Tails are great at reinforcing positive behaviors and making walks enjoyable (and manageable!) for every pup.

🛎️ Sick or Tired? Let Them Rest

If your dog isn’t feeling well, it’s best to skip the walk and let them rest. Even during these beautiful June days, some dogs may need to cool down and take it easy.

Watch for:

  • Heavy panting
  • Slowing down or dragging paws
  • Licking lips, yawning (signs of stress or overstimulation)

We know it’s hard to skip a walk, but your dog’s health comes first. And if you need help keeping your schedule consistent while your pup recovers – or just want someone reliable to step in – Wag 4 Tails is here 365 days a year. Rain or shine, we walk with heart. ❤️
